JAMES SLATER
James is an experienced intellectual property, First Amendment, and civil rights lawyer. He has prosecuted and defended copyright and trademark cases big and small on behalf of both individuals and enterprises. In addition to his robust federal IP practice, James also advises clients through trademark prosecution and matters at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
Previously, James worked for various boutique firms in Miami, where he primarily focused on intellectual property and media litigation. He also worked at legal aid on a project involving homelessness and as a judicial law clerk in the Southern District of Florida.
Prior to practicing law, James initially pursued a career in academia, earning a Master’s degree in Slavic Languages and Literatures with the intention of becoming a Russian literature professor. He left academia to pursue the prestigious National Security Education Program’s Russian Overseas Flagship in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. He then spent several years working in Russia as an interpreter, translator, and in the administration of a State Department program.

James holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and the U.K. He enjoys a dynamic life, traveling between Atlanta, Miami, and various hiking trails across North America with his family and dogs. In addition to hiking, he spends his time rock climbing, gardening, practicing tai chi and learning new languages. He is fluent in Russian, proficient in Spanish and Polish, and is currently learning Mandarin with his children, while also trying to muster the courage to resume learning agglutinative languages.

James earned a Master’s degree in Slavic Languages and Literatures, initially aiming to become a professor before transitioning into law. His diverse legal experience includes roles as a judicial law clerk in the Southern District of Florida, co-directing a legal advocacy project for the homeless, and practicing at boutique firms specializing in intellectual property and media law.
